Cumberland integrates STEM in all of its science classes and beyond. Our purpose is to offer students a chance to go deeper into some of the more interesting areas where science, technology, engineering, and math come together.

We know nationally that 60-70% of the careers of the future will be in STEM fields and that project-based learning develops great team building and problem solving skills. Also, because they are hands-on, STEM projects create a fun and lively environment in which to learn.

Giving our students extra opportunities in STEM will help their long-term success and allow them to explore potential careers of the future.

Elementary

  • 5th Grade STEM Week - Our students had great fun building Rube Goldberg style not-so-simple machines, visiting a nature and ecology center, building LEGO Techniques simple machines and programming LEGO Mindstorm robots.

  • Science Fair - In January, students in 1st-5th grades work individually and in groups to create an awesome science fair. From paper airplane design to fruit batteries to water filters to hand sanitizer testing to fresh cut flower food, the students do an amazing job learning and presenting.

  • U.S. Space and Rocket Center - Each spring our 5th grade travels to Huntsville, AL to spend a few days experiencing the life of an astronaut. This is an amazing overnight field trip.

  • STEM Summer Camp - Each summer our staff offers several STEM camps. The list varies each year, but recent camps have included Extreme Weather, Rocketry, and Scratch programming.

Middle School

  • STEM Elective - the block schedule allows students the flexibility of a STEM elective as part of their regular class schedule.

  • Science Fair - In January, students in grades 6-12 will display their very creative science projects. Winners will move on to the regional/county level of competition.

  • Swim with the manatees - 7th grade students get up close and personal with an endangered species and learn how God created amazing yet fragile marine ecosystems.
